Bishop’s Message

Brothers and Sisters of the 8th ward, at the end of May we had a combined lesson. I wanted to be sure that everyone had the opportunity to benefit from that discussion.

Life is a journey and each of us has had different experiences and has tried different ways of engaging with that journey. What I am sharing today is one approach on how to engage in spiritual learning. I hope this empowers you in your personal life to find value in studying the gospel and incorporating learning into your regular life.

This is the learning I have identified:

    Vision

    Luke 2:52

    Moses 1:39

    Abraham 3:22-25

    Effort

    Moroni 7:34-35

    D&C 39:4-6

    Alma 7:11-13

    2 Nephi 31:15, 20

    2 Nephi 32:8-9

    Mosiah 29:20

    Truth

    D&C 88:118

    D&C 93:24

    D&C 130:18-21

    Believe

    Alma 32:21, 26-28

    Ether 12:4-6, 27

    John 16:33

    D&C 101:16

    D&C 103:36

Not everyone starts in the same place, but generally, each of these areas are part of the universal journey while on this earth. As you read through the scriptures on this chart consider how they shape each stage of the cycle. Here are some ideas that came out of our lesson:

Vision: This is God’s vision for you and what you can become. Knowing this helps you have direction and purpose in your personal progression

Effort: The Gospel (aka The Doctrine of Christ) is a mechanism for learning and growth.

    Examples are:
    Faith → Desire + Action
    Repentance → Adapt and Change
    Ordinances and Covenants → Commitment
Blessings and Gifts → Learning and Growth
Endurance to the End → Refinement

Truth: Truth is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Identifying and following truth can help orient you towards light that will bring you closer to God and safely navigate the various complexities of the world.

Believe: The Gospel is not limited to a set of do’s and don’ts. The Savior taught us there was a better way, so we must believe and find within ourselves what matters to us and grow to accept God’s plan and will for us.

I know this message is a very different format than an in-person discussion. I’m happy to discuss any questions or thoughts with anyone if that is helpful for you. I know that learning is a vital part of our earthly journey. Please see God’s vision for you and understand that truth doesn’t change. In a world of ever-changing priorities, knowing where to go, how to identify and accept the truth and light into your life can be key tools to help you stay ahead of the curve when it matters most. I pray this is a blessing in your life. – Bishop Paul Raffensparger

    2023 Sunday Meetings

    12:00 – 1:00 PM

    • Sacrament Meeting

    1:10 – 2:00 PM

Check out this Come Follow Me Line-Upon-Line video! They are made for children but adults find them extremely helpful as well! Something interesting from this one is, Near the end right when Christ says “It is finished,” the narrator explains how the Jewish Fathers would shake & tear their cloak when a child died. So, when Christ died, symbolically the earth shook & the veil was rent.
